Traditional acupuncture is part of an ancient system of medicine believed to have originated over 2,000 years ago in China. It has seen ongoing development over the centuries, which continues today both in China and in the West. Acupuncture is now regularly used by millions of people worldwide.

Chinese Medicine sees the body, mind and spirit as connected by flows of vital energy or ‘Qi’. When these energy flows are smooth and uninterrupted, we remain in good health. Feelings of poor health or illness result from imbalances which may develop for many reasons. Acupuncture treatment aims to re-establish this balance.

Traditional acupuncture involves far more than the simple insertion of needles into painful areas of the body. Traditional acupuncturists are trained in various adjunctive therapies such as moxibustion and cupping which can be of benefit to many people.

For example, moxibustion (the burning of a species of mugwort to warm specific points on the body) is currently being developed as a treatment for drug resistant malaria in East Africa
